Abduction cases on increase

104 not yet traced in 3 months: 35 rescued so far

Joynal Abedin Khan :The incidents of abduction rose alarmingly in the recent days due to political unrest.At least 104 people could not be traced in the last three months compared with 41 disappeared during the corresponding period of last year.However, the law enforcers rescued at least 35 abducted people in the last two months, police sources said.At least six bodies of schoolchildren were recovered in March in five districts. They were kidnapped as their families failed to pay ransom for their release, sources said.Body of Abu Sayeed, an abducted schoolboy, was found in the residence of a police constable in Kumarpara Jharnarpar residential area in Sylhet on March 15.Mohammad Osman Gani, a businessman, was rescued from Mekanichara hill in Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar district on March 20.Law enforcers rescued at least 14 people from Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, Feni, Netrakona, Natore, Gazipur and Comilla in last 20 days. Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque told the media recently that if anybody could prove the involvement of the law enforcement agencies in such abduction, the authorities would take action against them.”We are also sincere in investigating such issues if the families (of victims) file cases alleging abduction by law enforcers,” he said claiming that the law enforcers maintain their duties and responsibilities properly.Jahirul Islam, Additional Inspector General (organised crimes) of police, told the New Nation that police took necessary action after being reported about kidnappings.’But incidents of kidnapping have increased due to the availability of mobile money transfer system’, the police official said.The kidnappers now prefer taking the ransom money through the mobile money transfer system. In such case, they remain out of reach of the police, he added.RAB media and legal wing Director Commander Mufti Mahmud said that sometimes friends, relatives and acquaintances commit the crimes as they have information about the children and their parents.
