Staff Reporter :
A group of miscreants recently had taken on attempt to abduct a businessman from the premises of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka when he was leaving the courtroom after securing bail in a case. Later, his relatives and lawyers with the help of police rescued him.
Sources said, Syed Jahirul Islam Amit, Managing Director of a renowned buying house, Ma-Manha Limited, came to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Tuesday for seeking bail in a case filed by a rival party. He was attacked by 20/25 unidentified miscreants in the corridor on the 7th floor of the court building immediately after leaving the courtroom on securing bail from the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim Uddin.
They assaulted him physically and at one stage they tried to abduct him from there. Then Amit’s brother Syed Shariful Islam Aunupam and some lawyers sought help from the police members deployed on the court premises. Police rescued him immediately from the hands of the miscreants, but the attackers waited for a long time on the ground floor of the court building to re-attack.
Later Inspector (Operation) Mohammad Nazmul Haque of Kotwali Police Station came to the spot with his force. They drove away the miscreants from there with the permission of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate and the businessman Amit was able to return home safely.
Nazmul Haque said, “The complainants mentioned about 20/25 attackers, however, we came to the scene and found 10/12 people. The miscreants were later driven away from the scene with the permission of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate.”
The police official said one of the attackers was Ruhul Amin, who identified himself as a member of the Chhatra Dal of the Dhaka City North unit. The police officer did not reveal the identities of others even though they took their names and addresses before ousting them from the court premises.
Meanwhile, the police didn’t file any case over the incident though the victim submitted a written complaint there. Inspector Nazmul Haque said, “We have received their complaint. We will record it as a case after a preliminary investigation.”
Some lawyers have condemned the incident of attacking a person on the court premises who came to the court for seeking justice.
Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu said, “The court should have adequate security measures. But in many cases the manpower is less. Opponents might have taken the advantage of this situation. The court must take seriously what happened on the court premises.”
“A justice seeker should be given security whoever he is. The victim can seek remedy in court. Strict disciplinary action should be taken against the attackers,” added the lawyer.
Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan, a Supreme Court lawyer, said, “The court premises is a protected area. Such an attack on a justice seeker proves that neither the justice seekers nor the witnesses are protected on the court premises. It is a threat to the independent judiciary.”
