The snatching incidents have risen in the Postagola Bridge area in the recent days. At least five gang of hijackers are involved in snatching incidents, local people alleged.
They claimed, the hijackers use to conduct their crimes in the middle point of the bridge and its several connected points freely as police hardly patrol the area.
At least seven snatching incidents take place every night on the bridge and its adjacent areas, a local shopkeeper told The New Nation recently. Most of the victims are pedestrians, visitors and spouses. They use the bridge for committing crimes at night, the shopkeeper alleged.
A senior journalist of an English daily said, “Three armed youths intercepted me and snatched my two cell phone sets and Tk 3,000 in cash at gun point in the middle of the bridge around 10:30pm.”
He claimed that, he did not see the presence of the law enforcers on the bridge at that time.
“I was returning to my Hasnabad residence from Jurain area on foot to avoid traffic jam and auto-rickshaw serial complication on the day. Now I fear to cross the bridge on foot,” he said.
Atiq Faisal is a student of Jagannath University (JnU) and resident of South Keraniganj told The New Nation on Sunday, “I was severely beaten by the hijackers as I refused to give my Smart mobile phone.” He also claimed that he did not get back his cell phone, even after drawing the attention of the Patrol Police and toll collectors.
Visitor Mehedi Hasan said, “I went to the bridge along with my younger sister for the first time at 9:00pm. Suddenly two men came to us and introduced themselves as members of an intelligence agency. They accusing us of involving in unsocial activities and tried to pick up. But they could not show any identity of detectives but snatched two cell phone sets from us.”
When contacted, Monirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) South Keraniganj Police Station said, “Nobody lodged any complaint with the Police Station about the snatching on the bridge.”
He admitted that the patrolling police are hardly seen in the middle of the bridge and said they would now take necessary steps to check the snatching on the bridge.
The OC mentioned that the north side of the bridge is under the jurisdiction of the Shyampur Police Station.
“We will arrest the criminals to pave the bridge for the free movement of the pedestrians and visitors,” he said.
Shyampur Police Station OC Abdur Razzak said that they would deploy additional police on the north side of the bridge to check snatching and other crimes.
