Fire panic is everywhere in the city from hospitals to the multi storied buildings. Anxiety is on rise and gripping the city residents because of several fire incidents in the last few months. After the City’s Shahid Suhrawardi Medical College and Hospital caught fire last February, time has arrived to look into the causes of fire for taking remedies.
The horrors of fire were witnessed from Nimtali to Churihatta, Gulshan DNCC Market to Banani F. T. Tower. In February this year, around 1200 patients had to be evaluated from the third floor of the new building of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in the city for security reason.
There is in fact no significant fire-fighting system in the city’s hospitals. Out of the 433 hospitals in the capital, around 422 are in hazardous situation.
According to a report of Fire Service and Civil Defence, around 97.5 percent hospitals of the city are in the fire risk. No government hospital in Dhaka city is equipped with enough fire safety measurement.
The Fire Service inspected 433 government and non-government hospitals and rehabilitation centres and labeled them as satisfactory, risky and high-risk places.
Of the hospitals, only 11 (2.5%) private hospitals were found to have enough fire safety equipment, while 421 (97.5%) hospitals were rated risky or high-risk. Of those, 175 (40.51%) hospitals are in highly vulnerable state.
Even none of national tertiary-level hospitals and divisional health care centres, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Combined Military Hospital and Kurmitola General Hospital were equipped properly for combating fire outbreaks and were categorized as risky.
Fire Service Director (Operation) AKM Shakil Newaj said: “Last year we inspected the hospitals and informed them about the shortage of fire dousing measurement.
“The recommendations we made would not involve much money, but will increase health care services and lots of security,” Director added.
