9 Ctg children die of `unknown fever` in 4 days

A total of nine children died reportedly of an unknown fever and 26 others fell ill in the last four days in deep forest area of Sitakunda upazila under Chittagong district.
Of them, four children died yesterday (Wednesday) while one on Tuesday, three on Monday and another on Sunday, our Chittagong staff correspondent reports quoting locals and doctors.
The deceased children, aged between one and 12 years, in the hilly areas of Tripura Para under Sonaichhari union, were suffering from fever around a week ago.
 “Four of them died on Wednesday in their dwelling houses,” said Sitakunda Upazila Health Officer Dr SM Nurul Karim Rashed.
The deceased are Kanai Tripura, 5, Fukhti Tripura, 6, Janaiya Tripura, 7, Romapati Tripura, 8, Takipati Tripura, 12, Kachham Roy Tripura, 10, Rupali Tripura, 3, Hridoy Tripura, 8, and Krishan Tripura, 2.
The other ailing children were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Nurul Karim said, that the children who caught the fever fell unconscious while shaking and then died.
He, however, could not say what type of fever it was and why the children were catching it.
 “The reason behind the fever could be known after examining the patients,” said Civil Surgeon Azizur Rahman Siddique visiting the area yesterday.
Meanwhile, a team of the Health Ministry has left Dhaka to visit the area, Nurul Karim said.
