BSS, Dhaka :
The government is preparing for smooth supply of electricity as 8,100 megawatt (MW) of power will be required during the irrigation season in the country.
“We have undertaken some measures to overcome major electricity failure during the irrigation season,” an official of power, energy and mineral resources ministry division told BSS.
He said the ministry has given instruction to take all out efforts for generating electricity smoothly during the major crops yielding season aimed at producing more.
“We are putting in our best effort to supply adequate power to the irrigation sector,” State Minister for Power Energy and Mineral Resources told BSS over phone Friday.
He said electricity will be supplied to the irrigation pumps without load-shedding in urban areas during irrigation season.
A meeting to ensure adequate power supply for irrigation, Ramadan and the summer season was held at the ministry recently and asked all concerned for taking special measure in this regard, according to the ministry source.
The source said the government supplied 6,766MW against the maximum demand of 7,356MW electricity during the boro season and the rest 590MW was managed through load-shedding management.
According to the ministry’s statistics, currently power Generation capacity reached to 11,265MW, which is covering 68 per cent of people across the country.
Every year farmers demand adequate power supply for boro farming, as the prime time, because grain formation is completely dependent on irrigation. The irrigation to the paddy plants is very essential at the blooming stage.
Earlier, the government gave maximum priority to an increased rice production to make the country self-sufficient in foodgrains and ensure fair price of paddy.
