800 families under threat of hillslide in Khagrachhari

At least 800 families of nine upazilas in the district are under the threat of hill slide, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Shahidul Islam.
A total of 11 families were rehabilitated by the district administration this year, and the rest families will be rehabilitated in turn, he also said.
The DC said this in a discussion organised by district administration at the conference room of Zila Shilpakala Academy on Saturday noon marking the International Day for Disaster reduction.
The DC further said all the 800 identified families have been living on hill tops. About 20 people including men, women and children lost their lives and huge properties were damaged due to hill slides in last 16 years.
“We are now working for these risky families as the concerned ministry has asked us to prepare a list of those people,” he added.
He sought cooperation from all corners to combat natural calamities.
Among others, Khagrachhari Municipality Mayor Md Rafiqul Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner ATM Kousar Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Salauddin, Vice President of Khagrachhari Red Crescent unit Jasim Uddin Majumder, its General Secretary Md Shany Alam, Station Master of Khagrachhari Fire Service and Civil Defence Abdul Kader, and BRAC official Humayun Kabir also spoke.
Earlier, a rally paraded the main roads of the town.
