Meharunnisa, Saidpur (Nilphamari) :
Eighty percent rehabilitation work on 18 old and obsolete coaches of railway in Saidpur Railway Workshop has already been completed.
Modernity has also been brought in designs which has been visited by the senior officials of Railway. Very soon, we will be able to manufacture more and more new coaches. This will save a large amount of foreign currency, Divisional Superintendent (DS) Mohammad Kudrat-e-Khuda said .
The old and back-dated rail coaches are being repaired and reformed in the country’s biggest Saidpur Railway Workshop. Railway officials, employees and workers are working day and night to give a good shape. The colour of the national flag is transformed into a red green line in the white space and it is being transformed into the level of world-class coaches. The sources said that about 76 crore taka will be saved due to these constructions.
According to sources, Saidpur Railway Workshop was established in 1870 on 110 acres of land. At the beginning 10/12 thousand employees were working in 26 shops (sub-factories) but currently 1,568 people are working. 2, 453 posts are vacant.
The manpower crisis has become extremely acute because of not being recruited for a long time and due to retirement of people from various shops. In this situation, rehabilitation of 18 Rail Coaches from the yard of Chittagong is going on in Saidpur Workshop. The construction of the coaches has started. Three of these have already completed its trial trip on 2nd February, Friday from Saidpur to Panchagarh. After the completion work of all coaches it will be placed at different route in place of the old coaches.
These 18 coaches of German technology were imported in 1998. Iran’s Wagon parts Company IR was the manufacturer. At that time, Suburno Express train was running on the meter gauge line at Dhaka-Chittagong Route with those coaches. After this, they were damaged due to the close of Surbono Express and it was kept for five years at Chittagong Pahartoli Railway Workshop.
A source from the Railways said that the Super Structure (the original structure) of the Iranian coaches were spoiled but the under frames or bogies were fairly active. As a result, the railway authorities took the initiative to rehabilitate the new rehabilitation system. At present, the manufacturing price of a meter gauge coach according to the world market is about five crore taka. However, the cost of reconstructing these coaches in Saidpur Workshop is only 80 lakh taka. In this case, the saving cost for each of the coach is 4 crore twenty lakh taka. That means, on 18 coaches, 75crore 60 lakhs foreign currency will be saved.
