A court in Dhaka on Thursday sentenced eight persons to life term imprisonment in a case filed over killing a man in the capital’s Turag area in 2008.
Judge Iqbal Hossain of the Special Judge’s Court-5 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in the morning.
The lifers are Alal Uddin, Joynal Abedin, Abdur Razzak, Abdus Sattar, Abdul Jabbar, Awal Mia alias Awal, Samar Ali alias Samar and Tamiz Uddin alias Tamu.
They were also fined Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more in jail.
On the other hand, convicts Sohail Rana, Sohrab Mia, Babul Mia and Firoz Mia were sentenced to one and a half years of imprisonment, while Barek, Mostafa and Md Omar Ali were acquitted as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
According to the case statement, the accused entered one Alek Mia’s house in Nalbhog village under Turag police station area around 11 am on June 25, 2008, and beat him indiscriminately over land disputes.
Locals rushed him to Moulana Bhasani Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared Alek dead.
Deceased’s brother filed a murder case with the Police Station in this connection.
The investigating officer of the case SI Mizanur Rahman filed chargesheet against the accused on November 25, 2008.
After taking depositions of 15 witnesses, the judge delivered the verdict.
