The left-leaning parties have called for observing an eight-hour hartal today (Thursday) as a mark of protesting the fresh power price hike.
Ganatantrik Bam Morcha, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Socialist Party of Bangladesh (BSD) jointly gave the call.Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from a press conference at Jatiya Press Club gave its support to the left wing paries.
The hartal will be enforced from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on an average raised power tariff by 5.3 percent or Tk. 0.35 per unit.
The rights group also blamed the government’s wrong policy for increasing power tariff hike eight times in last eight years
The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has proposed to reduce the bulk tariff price by Tk 1.32 per unit. At present, the bulk tariff of per unit electricity is Tk 4.90.
