78 sacks of relief rice seized in Jessore

Police caught red handed a woman member of Shubharara Union council under Abhaynagar upazila along with 78 sacks of sacks meant for government relief for the poor while these were taken away.
Sheikh Nasir Uddin, Officer -In-Charge, Abhaynagar police station told New Nation that a total of 78 sacks of rice allotted by the government as relief for the poor were seized by the police while these were being taken away on Sunday night. He, however, denied the information of arresting any UP member in this connection.
Locals told newsmen that Shubharara camp police led by in-charge Moktar Hossain caught Nargis Akhtar, UP member for the reserved seat for women of Shubharara union council along with several sacks of rice meat for relief at around 9:30pm on Sunday. She was then taken to the police camp along with the rice.
Chairman of the union council, Shahjahan Munshi and some others fled the scene sensing the presence of the police, they added.
The government allocated 20 kilograms of rice per head for the poor to the union council as relief. But the poor were given 10 kgs of rice per head instead of the government allocation. The left were being taken away to a place to be sold, villagers added.
SM Rafiqul Hiader, upazila social welfare officer, Abhaynagar filed a case with the police station in this connection.
