77pc households lose income during pandemic

The average monthly income of around 77 per cent of households in Bangladesh decreased between April and October in 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Around one member of 34 per cent households lost jobs at the same period, according to findings of a joint research by the Centre on International Cooperation at New York University, BRAC and UN WOMEN Bangladesh.
To cope with the situation, those families used up their savings and took loans, which has led to 62 per cent decrease in the average monthly savings. Around 31 per cent household faced increase in debt.
The findings were unveiled at a virtual international dialogue titled, ‘Demographic and socio-economic changes induced by the Covid-19 pandemic: Challenges of new circumstances’ on June 23.
