Staff Reporter :
A total of 72 hearing-impaired children will undergo free cochlear implant surgery at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital.
The surgery will be free from cost for the patients as the Social Welfare Ministry will bear all the expenses, said Dr Md Abul Hasnat, the Director of the Surgery Project, at a programme held at the Shaheed Dr Milon auditorium of BSMMU on Sunday.
The medical device for the cochlear implant is very expensive and worth more than a million BDT, he said.
A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain.
Previously, 152 children underwent the cochlear implant surgery in two phases supported by the same programme, whose hearing ability has significantly improved, speakers said.
Dr Md Abul Hasnat presided over the programme while BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan was present as the chief guest.
The children will be able to hear again after the surgery is completed and they no more will be burden to the society, they said.
