71pc construction works of Bangabandhu Tunnel completed

Although many development works have stopped during Corona, progress has been made in the mega project Bangabandhu Tunnel. Already 71 percent of the work of the project has been completed.
The rest of the work will be completed within the stipulated time, the concerned said.
If the construction of this tunnel at the bottom of Karnafuli river is completed, another new city can be built in Chittagong metropolis as well as Anwara-Karnafuli upazila on the other side of the river. The project is expected to be completed by 2022.
Harunur Rashid, project director of Bangabandhu Tunnel, said the construction work of the mega project ‘Bangabandhu Tunnel’ has already been completed by 71 percent.
A tube has been fully laid from Patenga end of Chittagong city to Anwara on the other side of the river Karnafuli.
The work of installing the second tube is also about 80 percent completed. In addition, work is underway on a land slab inside the first tube, through which vehicles will pass.
On 24 February 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction of Bangabandhu Tunnel.
In addition to the 3.4 km long main tunnel, a 5.35 km connecting road is being constructed at the Patenga and Anwara ends and an overbridge of 628 meters at the Anwara end. The project is being implemented at a cost of around Tk 10,384 crore.
The project will accelerate the development of the proposed industrial area on the east bank of the Karnafuli River and establish improved and convenient communication system with Chattogram city, Chattogram port and airport on the west bank, said the project officials.
