Seven state owned jute mills of Khulna region have been facing severe financial crisis due to financial crisis and continuous loss.
Among 19 jute mills in Khulna region , 7 are running by the government . A total of 50 thousands workers and employees have been working. The state owned jute mills are now not in a position to run due to financial crisis. They can not sell Jute goods and on the other side they can not buy raw jutes as the government has not assisting them with fund.
Middle east countries are the vital points of Bangladesh jute goods. But due to prevailing unrest they are not agree to purchase jute goods. (such as bags, ropes, carpets etc.)
from Bangladesh. As a result jute goods worth about Tk. 400 crores are remained unsold. Mills authorities can not repay the arrear dues to the workers-employers .
If the government Jute mills goes under the Privatization Board, many workers-employees will be unemployed and they would not get salaries and other benefits like Govt. mills this reason they started agitation programmed including protest procession, rally and high way blockade, submitting memorandum and gherao.
Md. Shah Alam, a CBA leader of crescent Jute mills told this correspondent that the workers of 9 state-owned Jute mills would go on a tougher agitation against the decision of privatization .
Shahana Sharmin, CBA leader of platinum Jubilee Jute Mills said, workers would continue their agitation against the decision of privatization till their last blood Gazi Sahadat Hossain, general manager (GM) of crescent jute mills said, we have nothing to do as government has decided to release Jute mills under privatization Board.
Anwar Hossain, labour officer of Khalishpur Jute Mills said, due to loss, mills are going to be privatized.
Manunur Rahman, Zonal Coordinator of BJMC, Khulna Zone told the New Nation that Government should take proper steps for saving Jute Mills in this region.
On condition of anonymity, an officer of khulna Zonal office of BJMC said, State-owned Jute mills are incurring loss of TK.250 crores each year and as such government is compelled to release mills under privatization Board.
Sardar Abdus Sattar, a retired labor officer of a jute mills and also a columnist told this correspondent that jute mills have been incurring loss due to two reasons such as purchasing machinery parts at high rate and case expenses by mills authorities.
