Seven students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Dhaka University were injured in a clash between the students of the two universities on the BUET campus on Friday night.
The injured students have been identified as Sourav, Abdullah Debba, Mahuri and Sadman of BUET and Imran of Dhaka University. The names of two other injured students could not be known.
They were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Additional policemen have been deployed to avert any more untoward incident on the both BUET and DU campuses.
On Friday afternoon, some BUET students confined Imran, a resident of Zahurul Haque Hall, to a room of Titumir Hall on the campus.
On information, DU Zahurul Hall students along with some BCL men rescued Imran and went on rampage in Titumir Hall on Friday night.
The students of the two nearby universities, carrying sticks, later came face to face at Polashi intersection and traded brickbats. BUET’s BCL President Shubhra Joti said it was unexpected that the DU students vandalised the BUET hall over a trifle matter.
But the DU BCL activists said that the students of Zahurul Haque Hall went Titumir Hall of BEUT to free Imran, but the rivals attacked them.
DU Proctor Dr AKM Golam Rabbani said they had formed a probe committee to investigate the incident. “There is no doubt about justice. We will take stern action if any student of DU is found guilty in the incident,” he assured.
Sources said a group of BUET students, carrying sticks and cricket stumps, chased away outsiders on the campus, alleging they had come to their campus to smoke marijuana on Thursday evening.
They also drove away pair who got intimate. A DU student was among the pair. The BUET students asked him to leave when he showed his ID card.
An altercation took place between the DU student and the BUET students when some of them allegedly hurled abusive words at the female student.
Later on Thursday night, a group of students from DU’s Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall beat up a BUET student at Polashi following the altercation in the evening.
