UNB, Dhaka :Plain-clothes police recovered huge fake currencies, including Indian rupee, and arrested seven people from Kamrangirchar in the city on Wednesday.They currencies included Bangladeshi Tk 20 lakh and Indian rupees 10 lakh.The arrestees are: Md Shah Alam, 28, Md Jahirul Islam alias Khokon, 32, Md Aminul Islam, 35, Shahin Sikder, 40, Md Habib, 25, Sambhu Nath Sarker, 48, and Md Kawser Ahmed, 38.Acting on a tip-off, a special team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan police (DMP) conducted a drive at Loharpool at around 4pm and arrested Khokon and Aminul while they were selling fake currency notes.The detectives also recovered 3 fake notes of Tk 1,000 denomination from Khokon, while 20 others from Aminul.Following their statement, the team conducted a raid on the house of Shah Alam at China Goli and arrested the other gang members.  They also recovered fake currencies of Tk 20 lakh of Tk 500 and Tk 1,000 denomination and Indian rupee 10 lakh from the house. Fake currency-making instruments and chemicals were also seized from the house.Briefing reporters at the DMP Media Centre on Thursday, Joint Commissioner of DB Monirul Islam said Shah Alam is the ringleader of the fake currency-trading syndicate. He used to make fake currency after hiring houses in different areas in the capital.Some 10 to 12 syndicates are involved in making fake currency in the city. They usually circulate the fake currencies targeting two Eids, the Joint Commissioner Monirul said.He also said, Sambhu Nath was a cashier of Sonali Bank. He was arrested in 2011 from a branch of the bank on charge of circulating fake notes along with the genuine ones.Later, he got involved with the fake currency-making syndicate after his release from jail on bail, the DB Joint Commissioner added.
