Chittagong city and district police, in a series of drives, detaineds7 activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir from the port city and three upazilas of the district on Wednesday night for their suspected involvement in ‘anarchic’ activities’.
Naimul Hasan, additional superintendent of police (special branch) of Chittagong district, said the law enforcers, in bid to prevent possible acts of sabotage during the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s blockade, detained 7 activists from various parts of Sitakunda, Mirsarai and Lohagara thana in Chittagong.
Meanwhile, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) also held two hartal supporters from separate areas in the city on that night. Among the detainees, one of BNP, four from Jammat activists, two Shibir men , the police officer added.
The BNP-Jamaat activists are believed to be linked with acts of vandalism and arson committed during the ongoing transport blockade and shutdowns, the official said.
