The Department of Forest has detained at least 60 deer poachers and seized traps and three trawlers, in the Joymoni area of Chandpai Range under East Sundarbans on Tuesday.
During the raid, Forest Guards recovered various tools including deer hunting traps, bait, axes and hair from the detainees in the Sundarbans Eastern Forest Division.
All of them were from different areas of Gourmava union under Rampal upazila of Bagerhat.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Forest Department Md Mahmudul Hasan confirmed the news to the media that some people were going to the Sundarbans before the scheduled time for the occasion of Rashmela.
When challenged by forest officers, they along with the three trawlers tried to flee quickly. They were arrested with the trawlers. Later, the deer hunting traps, chopper and axes were seized by searching the trawlers, he added.
The convicts were kept in the Chandpai Range of the Sundarbans. Legal action is being taken against them, the official also said.
