Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has said, the economic progress and growth cannot be achieved fast if there is no ‘rule of law’ in the country. So, it is indispensable and obligatory to establish rule of law, he observed.
The Chief Justice was speaking at a judicial conference organised at the Tangail Circuit House on Wednesday.
He said, corruption has so spread that about 60 percent of fund of every development project is misappropriated, while 40 percent only is spent for development only.
Martial Law promulgated at different times since the Pakistani period contributed to expansion of corruption to a great extent. Corruption during the pre-Martial regime was confined in a few departments only, now it has penetrated into almost all the departments, even judiciary, the Chief Justice further said.
Coordination among all departments including police, administration, judiciary and magistracy is needed to establish rule of law, he said stressing that everyone must do his or her own duty instead of killing time criticising the government only. He also observed that a ‘vested quarter’ was trying to curb the judiciary’s activities.
Chief Justice Sinha also attended a views-exchange meeting organised at the Tangail District Advocate Bar Association. Corruption would come down if the state’s other organs cooperate with the judiciary and pay them due respect, he viewed.
“No one, not even the head of the state or a Supreme Court judge, is above the law. The judiciary is independent, but the judges are not. The judges are under obligation to follow some rules and ethics,” S. K. Sinha said.
While speaking about terrorism in the country in the recent times, he said many people are associated with terrorism because of a wrong explication of religion.
There is not a single verse backing up terrorism in the holy Book of Islam, the Chief Justice said, adding that wrong clarification of Hadith is also contrary to Islam.
“Respecting the judiciary, whoever holds the post, is tantamount to honouring the Constitution and the independence of the country.
