Police-villagers clash: 6 shot at in Sirajganj

Six villagers were reported to be shot at in a clash with police over sand lifting from Fuljhar River in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj on Friday.
Two policemen also sustained injuries.
The clash erupted in Alokdia area under Salonga upazila in the afternoon.
The villagers with bullet injuries are Rafiqul Islam, 32, Sakhawat, 40, Foni, 25, Yunus Ali, 18, Shanti Khatun, 35, and Abdul Malek.
They were rescued and rushed to different hospitals.
Identities of the injured policemen couldn’t be known immediately.
One Monirul Islam from Alokdia village said that sand was being lifted from a land of Fuljhar River since the morning. Afterwards, locals chased the sand lifters.
At one stage, a clash broke out as police came to the spot, on information.
Six villagers were hurt as police opened rubber bullets in self-defence, he added.
Salonga Police Station Officer-in-Charge ATM Tajul Huda said that enraged villagers hurled brick chunks on patrolling police members, all on a sudden.
Several rounds of rubber bullets were fired in self-defence to calm the situation, he added. The OC added that he wasn’t aware of bullet injury of any villager.
