6 prisoners among 7 killed in Gazipur road crash: OC closed

At least seven persons, including five prisoners and a police constable, were killed in a head-on collision between a prisoners’ carrying human hauler (leguna) and a truck on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Purabari area of Gazipur Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon.
The victims were identified as police constable Mustafa Kamal, 38, tempo driver Mominullah, 28, accused Sohel Rana, 27, Manik Mia, 30, Masud Rana, 32, Monir Hossain, 26, and Sohrab Mia, 15, residents of Durlapha village
of Sreepur upazila of the district, said Gazipur district Police Super (SP) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid.
The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Gazipur.
Sreepur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abdul Mutalib Mia has been closed on charge of negligence to duty, the police official said.
A three-member probe committee led by Delwar Hossain, Additional Police Super of the district, has formed to investigate the incident, the SP said.
The committee has been asked to submit the report to the authorities concerned within three working days.
Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid said that 13 prisoners and a team of police were coming from Sreepur Thana to Gazipur court by riding in a human hauler. It collided head-on with a truck in Porabari area of the district. Six of the victims died on the spot, while the policeman died on his way to DMCH, he said.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and other government high officials visited the spot.
The minister announced that the government would pay for the treatment of the injured persons. Earlier, Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nurul Islam said that the local administration would have pay compensation to the victims.
