6 ‘kidnappers’ held in city

The Anti-kidnapping Squad detained six alleged kidnappers, including a woman, in their separate drives in the city’s Mirpur and Badda areas on Tuesday night.
The special detective team arrested them in connection with kidnapping and collecting ransom from a Union Parishad chairman of Sylhet.
The arrested kidnappers are Masuma, 27, Rajib alias Sajib, 23, Md Nikul, 26, Abul Kashem, 47, Iqbal Hossain alias Kabir, 35, and Emdadur Rahman, 30.
Acting on secret information, a team of the Anti-kidnapping Squad conducted simultaneous drives in the areas at night and arrested the six people.
Briefing reporters at DMP media centre at noon, DMP’s spokesperson and Joint Commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam said the arrested gang members kidnapped Md Ataur Rahman Manik, 46, chairman of Gualabazar union parishad of Osmaninagar in Sylhet, from Badda area in the capital on May 11.
Later, the gangsters took obscene photographs of the chairman with another gang member Shilpy and demanded a huge amount of money the following day, he said and adding that they freed Ataur after realising Tk 40,000 and on condition of giving Tk 3 lakh more.
The members of the anti-kidnapping squad started investigation into the incident after Ataur filed a case with Gulshan police station on May 13, Joint Commissioner Monir said.
After investigation , the DB squad arrested the six kidnapers but its ring leader Jahangir is still at large, he said.
During interrogation, they confessed their involvement in chairman kidnapping. They also revealed that the ring leader, Jahangir, used his sister-in-law Masuma in trapping targeted people over phone, the DMP spokesperson said.
He also said that the gangsters have already collected ransom of Tk 3.21 lakh from another UP chairman under Nabiganj police station in Sylhet, one and a half month back, Tk 2.08 lakh from an expatriate of the same area two months back and Tk 50,000 from another young man of Sylhet and Tk 19,00 from a resident of Comilla.
DMP formed the force to fight the ongoing kidnapping spree in the country.
