Police- fishermen clash over catching hilsha: 6 injured, 27 fishermen held in Chandpur

During the on- going drives against netting mother hilsa from 9 October till 30 October spawning period, in the Meghna and Padma rivers from Shatnol in Matlab Uttar up to Haimchar Upazila, a clash, that took place between the on duty River Police personnel and the angry fishermen in the Meghna river bank at Raj Rajeswar area under Chandpur Sadar early Monday, left two fishermen, three Police personnel and speed boat driver injured.
 OC River Thana Abu Taher Khan has told this correspondent that a River Police team led by SP Jamsher Ali launched a drive against netting mother Hilsa early in the morning today in the Meghna river. When they reached Raj Rajeswar char area, a clash took place when unruly fishermen armed with bamboo sticks and brick pieces launched an attack upon Police who were then bound to open five rounds of rubber bullets for their self defence.  
Of the injured, two fishermen- Nazmul Hossain Sheikh,20, and Monir Hossain Sheikh,35 of Raj Rajeswar village are now admitted to Chandpur General Hospital. The injured three Police personnel are SI Jakir Hossain ,Nayek Delwar Hussain and cop Shariar Hossain and the speed boat driver Rubel Mia,20, were given first aid at this hospital.
Police detained 18 fishermen from the spot during the clash. They all except one minor boy were sent to jail hajot through court after a regular case was filed with Sadar Model Thana accusing all of them -said OC River Thana Abu Taher Khan.
River Police also seized 21 kgs of mother Hilsa and 50 thousand metres of illegal current nets from them.
On the other hand , an Executive Magistrate Mohammad Oliduzzaman in a mobile court sentenced eight fishermen to suffer one year’s jail and sent them all to jail hajot. These fishermen were caught red handed during separate drive by the members of the Coastguard Chandpur led by Coastguard leader Mainul Hossain. Coastguard members also seized 50 kgs of mother Hilsha and three thousand metres of illegal current nets.
 Haimchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ferdousi Begum has also jailed two fishermen on charge of netting mother Hilsa fish for one year each . They are Amir Hossain Gazi,27 and Monir Gazi, 35, of Haimchar areas.
District Fisheries officer Asadul Baki has said, all the detained 27 fishermen have been sent to jail hajot with jail terms.
