A court in Jhenaidah in a verdict on Monday afternoon awarded life imprisonment to six persons in killing case of Tofazzel Hossain of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila.
The court also penalled Taka 10 thousand for each, otherwise to suffer another one year in the prisons. Eight others of the accused were acquitted from the case when the court found them not guilty.
The verdict was declared in the court of Additional Sessions Judges 1 Sana Mohammad Mahruf Hossain, said the court sources.
The accused were Khelafat Hossain Biswas, Belayet Hossain Biswas, Kabir Hossain, Yunus and Laddu of Ghoramara village in Jhenaidah Sadar. The name of another accused could not be known immediately.
The prosecution in brief was the accused on July 6 in 1991 evening had beaten up to death some Tofazzel Hossain Mandal of Ghoragachha village at Goalpara Bazer in same upazila. Abdul Motaleb Mandal, elder brother of the deceased filed a case with Jhenaidah Sadar police next day. The police after investigation submitted charge sheet against 16 persons.
The court convicted six and acquitted eight, while of the accused already had died.
Senior lawyer in Jhenaidah Bar Rajab Ali fight fir the accused, while public prosecutor Ismail Hossain stood for the state, the sources said.
