S.M.Saiful Islam, Additional District and Session Judge of Bagerhat, in a judgment delivered on Tuesday, convicted 6 extremists and sentenced them to suffer rigorous imprisonment for life and to pay a fine of Tk.10 thousand each in default to suffer another rigorous imprisonment for one year more on the charge of slaughtering Shaikh Sharifuzzaman (45), an established contractor of village Mansha within Bahirdia Union under Fakirhat Upazila in the district.
The convicted persons are: Abdul Shaikh, Abdur Rahman, Arif Shaikh, Masud Rana, Azmor Hossain and Abbas Shaikh. Among them Abdur Rahman was absent at the time of delivering the judgment. Abdul Matin, one of the accused persons was, however, acquitted of the charge for want of sufficient evidences.
The prosecution story, in short, is that the accused persons demanded illegal money from deceased Shaikh Sharifuzzaman in the year 2006. But being failed to realize the illegal money they (accused persons) slaughtered him on September 16, 2006 at Mansa-Chara-Battala area under Fakirhat Upazila. In this connection Nasima Begum, wife of the deceased registered a murder case with Fakirhat PS on the same day against a number of unidentified persons. Police investigated into the matter and submitted a charge sheet to the court on February 28, 2007 against 7 persons.
