A total of 596 members of different banned extremists groups of northern districts surrendered their arms in Pabna on Tuesday in order to lead a normal life.
They handed 68 firearms and 575 locally made weapons in presence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Javed Patwary at Pabna Shaheed Advocate Aminuddin Stadium yesterday afternoon.
If they swear that they will not pick up criminal activities again in future, they will receive legal assistance from the government, the Minister said.
The outlaws expressed their willingness to return to the normal life, our Pabna correspondent reports from the spot.
Addressing the function, a leader of Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Lal Pataka), Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi region, named Abdur Razzak alias Art Babu said, “As the government has given an opportunity, I want to come back to the path of light from darkness.” Most of those who surrendered belong to the Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Lal Pataka), New Purbo Banglar Communist Party, Nakshal, Purbo Banglar Sarbahara Party, and north Bengal-based Kadamati
They were allegedly involved in anti-social activities, including extortion, murder and kidnapping. They have been taken under the police custody for maintaining legal process, the police official said.
The parties were active in Pabna, Natore, Sirajganj, Bogura, Naogaon, Joypurhat, Rangpur, Kushtia, Jashore, Jhenidah, Rajbari, Satkhira, Narail, and Tangail districts.
There are criminal cases against the most of the surrendered extremists including murder, robering, ransom and extortion.
The cases against them will continue, but they will come to normal life after completion of different legal process, police officials said.
