BSS, Narsingdi :
Over 58,000 tonnes of summer vegetables are expected to be produced in the district this year.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and farmers better output of vegetables is expected due to favourable weather prevailing now.
Deputy Director of DAE Latafat Hossain told BSS that farmers so far produced 55,000 tonnes of vegetables this season in the district.
The target production of 58,000 tonnes would be achieved if favourable climate continue to prevail until the next month, he said.
A total of 7, 800 hectares of land were brought under summer vegetables cultivation in six upazilas of the district in the current season.
Farmers regularly use pesticides and chemical fertilizers in their crop field especially vegetable field. The DAE has advised the farmers about the bad effects of using pesticides and chemical fertilizers in vegetable fields.
The DAE also provided training on pest management to inspire the farmers for cultivating pesticide-free vegetables using vermin-compost and other organic fertilizers avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides in their field. Different kinds of summer vegetables like potato, lady’s finger, kakrol, korolla, cucumber, pumkin, borboti, brinjal, patol, jhinga, puishak, datashak, arum, chili and other vegetables grow aplenty in the district.
A number of farmers in different upazila of the district are producing pesticide-free vegetables using organic fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and they are getting fair prices.
The DAE sources said a good numbers of poor families in the district achieved economic self-reliance through vegetables farming during the last couple of years.
