Hilsa netting has started from early Monday after ending of 22-day restrictions making Barisal Hilsa market crowded from Monday morning.
Fishery officials demanded that the programme has become successful.
After visiting Hilsa market at Barisal Port Road area at noon huge crowd was seen there busy in trading the fish netted from near rivers and estuaries.
On Monday in this wholesale market Hilsa fries Jatka sold at the rate of Tk 6-8 thousand, Gotla (less than 400 grams) at Tk.10-12 thousand, Velka ( 400-500 grams) Tk.15-17 thousand, LC( 600-900 grams) Tk. 22-25 thousand and Grade ( more then one Kg) Tk.32-40 thousand per mound. On other hand Azizul Haque, senior assistant director of divisional fishery department, said they with the help of the Upazila administration, police, coastguard, RAB conducted 2092 drives in the Kalabadar, Kirtankhola , Arial Kha, Meghna,Ilisha, Bishkhali, Tetulia, Sandhya, Sugandha rivers and estuaries to make the ban successful in the division for safe spawning of the Hilsa. He demanding the execution of ban as successful for ensuring safe spawning of mother hilsa said it will increase our hilsa resources more.
Giving details he said 580 fishermen sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in six districts of Barisal division in the last twenty-two days (Oct 1 to Oct 22) for violating the 22-day ban against hilsa netting, he said.
A total 705 cases were lodged, 968 mobile courts formed, 10 mt of hilsa seized, Tk 16.29 lakh taka fines realized from fishermen and 40.31 lakh metres of nets destroyed during the ban period in the division.
Bialy Chandra Das, Barisal district fishery (Hilsa) official, said there may some mother Hilsa at the market as Hilsa does not lay eggs at a time and usually Hilsa lays eggs in 6 rounds of new and full moon.
As the ban was imposed for only two rounds, so there may some mother Hilsa in the market, he explained.
