50,000 people rendered homeless in Nikli haor

At least 50 thousand people have been rendered homeless in Kishoreganj ‘s Nikli haor upazila of Kishoreganj two rivers named Dhanu and Ghorauttra rivers dam collapsed.
Hundred villages in Chatirchar and Shingpore unions structures of Nikli upazila are in a serious threat of collapse after receding floodwater. Around 500 houses under Chatirchar union have already collapsed. Most of the people of the area are trying to find safe places for shifting.
Some portion of the upazila protection dam has already collapsed earlier, hundred of villagers in Nikli upazila of Kishoreganj are worried about losing their belongings to continues erosion of Dhanu and Ghorauttara river. Fisherman Ali Hossain said “All of my lands exept my dwelling house have been washed away by the rivers. The situation continues for a few days around 50,000 people will be homeless.
Singpore Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Mohammad Ali said my Union have already collapsed. “If an effective measure has not been taken mosques, educational institutions, hat bazar will be collapsed within a short time.”
When contact to Water Devepolment Board (WDB), executive engineer in Kishoreganj , Md. Matiur Rahman told the New Nation that at least 20 thousand sacks have been provided to protect Singapore and Chatirchar Unions.
ECNEC has already approved a project worth Tk 54.71 crore to protect Chhatirchar and a project worth Tk 66.78 crore to protect Singhapur village and kitchen market . It is possible to prevent erosion next year if the works can be completed properly by inviting tenders. UNO in Nikli Abu Hasan said, necessary steps wil be l taken to curb erosion in Nikli haor upazila.
