50,000 manpower to be recruited for police force: PM

Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina yesterday said her government has taken a decision in principle to recruit 50,000 more manpower for the police force.
“Moreover, a process for constituting a special counter- intelligence unit is going on to contain terrorism,” she said relying to a written question from treasury bench member Shamsul Haque Chowdhury during her question-answer session in the House.
She said a total of 30,474 new manpower has been added to the police force by creating new specialized units in the organizational structures of the force to maintain law and order. “Creation for 1,557 new posts is under process,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said her government is following the “zero tolerance” policy to root out terrorism. “Surveillance has been stepped up through patrolling on highways and river routes round-the-clock and using modern technologies to eliminate terrorism,” she said.
She said searching is being made by setting up check posts and terrorism resistance committee has been constituted comprising local public representatives and distinguished persons of all levels including imam and muazzins.
The Leader of the House said arrangements have been made to create public awareness about bad impact of terrorism through meetings, seminars and mass media.
She said the people are being involved against the terrorist acts by forming community policing, bit policing and civic committees. Anti-terrorist drive is continuing by collecting information through intelligence agencies secretly and the public openly.
The Prime Minister said her government is playing a time- befitting and effective role curbing corruption. “The government is also following a “zero tolerance” policy to this end,” she said.
Besides, she said, the government has taken various steps to keep at tolerable level the prices of essential goods like rice, pulses, oil and sugar.
