500 magistrates to be on election duty for 4 days

UNB, Dhaka :Some 500 magistrates along with the army and the regular law enforcement agencies will be kept deployed for four days from April 26 to 29 in the three cities in Dhaka and Chittagong to punish violation of election code of conduct, as the Election Commission fears violence.The Election Commission (EC) has decided to deploy the 500 magistrates, including 33 judicial ones, in the three city corporations-DhakaNorth City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC)– for four days from April 26, two days before the balloting, slated for April 28, EC officials said.As there are 134 wards in three cities –57 wards in DSCC, 36 in DNCC and 41 in CCC, some four magistrates will be in each ward on average in Dhaka and Chittagong to conduct the mobile courts for the four days.The EC has decided to engage the huge number of magistrates fearing election violence.The magistrates with three battalions (2553 personnel) of the army and some 65,000 regular law enforcers, including member of police, Rab, BGB, Coast Guard and Ansar, will punish incidents of election violence through summary trials.
