50 sued over Demra bus bomb attack

A case has been filed against 50 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, including 18 of the central level, in connection with the bomb attack on a bus in the capital’s Demra area on January 23, the 18th day of the non-stop countrywide blockade, that left at least 30 people burnt.
Sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station AKM Nuruzzaman filed the case against the 50, all identified, with the police station on January 24.
The case was lodged under stringent law- the Special Powers Act 1974 under sections 15/25D accusing them of perpetrating acts of sabotage and attempting to prejudicial activities.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia called the indefinite blockade from January 6 as the government did not allow her party and its allies
to hold protest rallies in the capital. The complainant in the first information report alleged that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had instructed the 20-party alliance leaders and activists to continue movement until the Awami League-led government quit.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, her special assistant Shimul Biswas, party joint secretaries general Amanullah Aman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Salahuddin Ahmed and its leader Nabiullah Nabi were among the accused.
Earlier, on January 24, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the Narayanganj-bound bus of ‘Glory Paribahan’ when it was crossing Katherpool area in Demra around 9:30pm, leaving at least 30 of its passengers with burn injuries.
Besides, two others were injured while getting down from the bus to escape fire. The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
