At least 50 shanties were gutted when a fire broke out at Amtali Slum of Raja Bazar in the city’s Farmgate area on Wednesday morning.
Informed by locals, 10 fire fighting units moved to the spot and doused the flame in around one and a half hours. No casualty was reported in the incident.
The fire fighters extinguished the fire around 9:45am, said Duty Officer of Fire Service and
Civil Defence Atiqul Alam Chowdhury.
“We suddenly saw large flames of fire engulfing the shanties. We don’t have any idea where and how it originated,” said Sharmin Khanom, a female resident of the shanty.
Fourth class employees of Dhaka University built the slum, local sources said.
While some of them live there, some others have rented the shanties to other people, they said.
