About 50 villages at Shyamnagar and Ashashuni upazilas in Satkhira district have been inundated due to unusual increase of water in the Kapotakkha and Kholpetua rivers.
In Ashashuni, 20 villages under Pratapnagar union have been submerged as some places of the embankment of Kapotakkha river have collapsed, 20 villages under Sreeula union were flooded as water entered the areas breaching some points of the dam of the Kholpetua river.
In Shyamnagar, seven points of the dam in Kapotakkha at Lebubunia union have been broken and water has entered the areas.
The floods left more than 100,000 people marooned while 2,000 fishing enclosures have been washed away by the flood water.
Sudhangshu Kumer, executive engineer of Water Development Board in Satkhira, said the low-lying areas under the two upazilas have been flooded as the water level of the two rivers has increased to 3.79 meters, causing immense suffering to the inhabitants.

Meanwhile, Satkhira district Nagorik Committee in an emergency meeting urged to the government to take intimidate steps to save the people in the coastal areas.
The meeting was presided over by the organization’s district convenor Md Anisur Rahman where many eminent persons spoke.
The speakers also demanded to give shelter of the people living in endangered areas, to feed them there regularly until the situation becomes normal, and to quickly repair the broken-embankments
