About fifty residential and commercial establishments were gutted by fire in Barishal city and Gournadi municipal town on Monday afternoon and morning.
Faruk Hossain, assistant director of fire service and civil defense station at Barishal, said fire catches from a house at Battala Sharif Bari in Barishal at 2:30 pm on Monday. Seven units of Barishal fire service station rushed to the spot and controlled the flame within half an hour.
About 15 tin-shed makeshift houses gutted in this incident and they investigating about source of fire and sustained losses.
Md. Russell, assistant commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police, said none was killed or injured in this incident. Police deployed in the area to maintain law and ordered and helping salvage operation.
In another incident devastating fire gutted 25 shops and damaged 14 others at Gournadi bus stand area of the municipal town on Barishal-Dhka highway about 3:30 AM Monday.
Affected peoples said properties of at least Tk.1.5 core damaged and five injured in operation for extinguishing fire. Traffic movement on the highway crossing in front of the spot disrupted for more than three hours till 7:00 AM
Abdus Salam, officer in charge of Gournadi station of fire service and civil defense said fire was instigated from electric short circuit at tea stall of Nizam Sardar and rapidly spread in the surrounding areas. Fire fighting vehicles from Gournadi, Wazirpur, Babuganj and Barishal stations rushed to the spot and controlled the flame within three hours.
The affected establishments included shops of stationery, grocery, electronics, computer, cloths, shoes, studio, hotel and restaurants, sweetmeats, godowns etc.
Five affected people named BM Bella, Sanjoy Kumar Pal, Sohel Shikdar, Arif Hossain and Khalilur Rahman, injured in attempts to control the flame and they alleged that pump of the Gournadi fire service was out of order and reaching fire fighters from other stations needed time increased the amount of damages.
Officials of administrations, law enforcing agencies, local government representatives visiting the spots assured the affected people to help them for recovering their damages.
