At least 50 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Haripur in Jaintapur upazila on Monday night.
Locals said a young man of Hemu Haudpara village went to Haripur Bazar to purchase shoe, and locked into an altercation with the shop owner, a resident of Balipara village, over its price, triggering the clash around 9pm.
In a sequel to the incident, residents of the two villages fought a pitched battle at Haripur Bazar, leaving at least 50 people injured. Ten of the injured were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The agitated villagers also vandalised 7-8 shops of the bazaar during the five-hour long fight.
Vehicular movement on Sylhet-Tamabil Highway was also disrupted for five hours following the clash, creating a long tailback on it.
On information, police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control around 2:30am, said officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Model Police Station Shafiul Kabir.
