At least50 peoplewere injured in a clash between garment workers and police in front of Naryanganj Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Adamjee area of Shiddhirganj on Sunday morning.
Hundreds of workers of different factories started to gather outside the EPZ main gate from 7 am and demonstrated demanding their due arrears and salary.
The unruly workers staged demonstrations blocking Adamjee-Narayanganj road and vandalised several vehicles plying on the road as well as set fire on a lorry.
On information, police rushed in and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse workers, triggering a chase and counter-chase between them.
At least50 workersand five policemen were injured during the melee. Later, the workers withdrew their blockade as local Awami League leaders assured them of taking proper steps regarding the matter.
Workers of Soad Fashions alleged that the factory owners locked the entrance of the factory and closed it for sine in the morning of September 22 without any prior notice.
A total of 3,000 workers of the factory protested in front of the factory demanding their arrears of four months after the owners of the factory failed to pay them as promised earlier.
Following the promise, workers gathered in front of the factory around 7 am and tried to enter the factory while police obstructed them, workers said.
Meanwhile, General Manager Mamun Mia of Soad Fashions said that due to some difficulties the factory has been shut shown primarily and will resume in January.
All the arrears of the workers will be paid within November 15, he added.
