Teesta River erosion: 50 families homeless, 100 families facing threat in Rangpur

Erosion by the River Teesta has rendered at least 50 families homeless at Hajipara village under Alambiditor union of Gangachara Upazila in the district during last one week.
In addition, vast areas of crop fields, a good number of vegetables gardens under the area have also been devoured by the river. Locals alleged that around 400 families live in Hajipara village. Last year some 100 families lost their houses due to river erosion. This year, so far 50 families have become homeless by erosion and more than one hundred families are facing the threat of erosion.
Abul Kashem, a farmer of the village said that Teesta devoured his 3 acres of cropland during last one year. Presently he has around 20 decimals of land which may go under water at any time, he lamented.Some victims said that Teesta engulfed everything on its bank and they hardly could save their household belongings from the erosion of the river. If adequate steps are not taken immediately to prevent erosion, more than one hundred houses may go under water soon, they apprehended.
In this situation local people have made an appeal to the government to take immediate measures to protect their lives and properties from erosion by the mighty Teesta.
Local Union Parishad (UP) chairman Aftabuzzaman said work of river protection embankment has already begun around 500 yards away from Hajipara area. The work is expected to begin in the affected area soon, he added.
