5 to walk gallows for murder in Gopalganj

Court Correspondent :A Dhaka Court yesterday awarded death sentence to five persons as they were proved involved in a murder in Gopalganj.The convicts are- Lelin Shikder, Md Monir Hossain, Md Swapon Molla alias Dalim, Md Obaidul Sheikh alias Ibadul Sheikh and Tapan Kazi alias Bagha.Judge ABM Sajedur Rahman of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 pronounced the verdict on Thursday.The court acquitted other six accused, as they were found not involved in the murder. They are Mokarram Sikder, Rezaul Kazi, Sheikh Roni Ahmed, Ahedul Mina, Farid Mina and Ahsan Kazi. Victim Shipon Kazi Junun, the convicts and the acquitted accused hail from Noikhanda village of Muksudpur Upazila in Gopalganj. The prosecution story says that, Shipon had business relation with Lenin Shikder. Besides, victim Shipon was in love with Lenin’s sister Monira. However, Shipon rejected the proposal of marriage with Monira and that excited the accused. On July 30, 2006, killed Shipon and damped the body at Gohala-Ujani canal of the area. On August 01, police recovered the dead body.Victim’s mother Morium Bibi lodged the murder case with Moksedpur Police Station. The court recorded the depositions of 14 witnesses to give the verdict.Special Public Prosecutor Md Mahbur Rahman conducted the case on behalf of the prosecution while Advocate Golam Mostafa Khan appeared in the court to defend the accused.
