A Bogura court yesterday sentenced five people to death and four others to various imprisonments in a freedom fighter and retired Army official murder case.
Those who have been awarded death penalty are: Md. Ismail Hossain son of late Ramzan Ali, Md. Mamun son of Ismail Hossain, Md. Sirajul Islam son of late Moyez Molla, Md. Rahim son of late Ramzan Ali and Md. Zulfiqur Ali Tutul son of Md. Ismail Hossain of village Bahadurpur under Gabtoli upazila of the district. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each.
District and Sessions judge Naresh Chandra Sarker pronounced the verdict in the case at noon. He also acquitted nine other accused as prosecution could not prove murder charges against them.
The retired Army personnel also Freedom Fighter Yasin Ali Mollah was hacked to death in brought day light on June 17, 2006 in front of his residence.
Anwara Begum, wife of the Yasin Ali, filed a case with Gabtoli Model Police Station on the following day, accusing 20 people.
After investigation, the then Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Sanowar Hossain of the police station pressed charges against 19 people on September 15 of the same year.
