At least five persons were killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka and Sirajganj on Thursday. Of the deceased, three were in Sirajgang and two in Dhaka city.
In Sirajganj, three persons, including a college teacher, were killed as a bus rammed a pick-up van on Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj district yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Gupindranath Sarker, 45, a lecturer at Shahjadpur Women College, Sohag, 28, son of one Dulal Ahammed from Magura Binod area and Renuka Khatun, 48, wife of Abdul Mannan from Ambariapara of the upazila.
Magura Binod Union Parishad Chairman Atikul Islam Bulbul told the media that an over speeding bus of Mamun Paribahan rammed the Hatikumrul-bound pick-up van in the morning.
Two persons died on the spot and four others were injured as the van plunged into the roadside drain.
Of the injured, one succumbed to his injuries after being taken to hospital around 10:30am.
Abdul Qadir Jilani, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Highway Police Station, said the bus was seized and the driver along with the helper detained.
In Dhaka, two persons were killed in separate road accidents in Shonir Akhra and Uttara areas of the capital on Thursday.
A bus rammed a motorcycle while overtaking on Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in Shonir Akhra of Jatrabari, leaving the rider critically injured.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where the physician declared him dead.
The deceased was identified as Nazim Uddin, 32, an employee of an English daily’s advertisement section.
Bacchu Mia, DMCH Police Outpost In-Charge Sub-Inspector (SI) confirmed the accident. In Uttara, Md Jakir, 30, was found critically injured in front of BGB Market at Sector-7.
Ziaur Rahman, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Uttara West Police Station, said that the locals rescued the youth and took him to Tongi General Hospital. Afterwards, he was sent to DMCH where the physicians declared him dead.
