Five officials of Jashore Child Development Centre (CDC) led the brutal torture on its inmates following a dispute on haircut that left three juveniles dead and 15 injured on August 13.
Besides, 7/8 inmates, obedient to the officials, took part in the torture. The decision to unleash the torture has been taken at a meeting, said M Ashraf Hossain, Superintendent of Jashore Police, in a press conference on Saturday.
He said five CDC officials have been arrested as the initial investigation conducted by the police found the allegation true.
The arrested are: CDC superintendent and assistant director Abdullah Al Masud, assistant superintendent Masum Billah, psychosocial councillor Mushfiqur Rahman, technical trainer Omar Farruq and physical instructor AKM Shahanur Alam.
Earlier on Friday police took 10 officials and employees under custody. Later, five were shown arrested following filing of a case at night.
SP Ashraf Hossain said the conflict began on August 3 as inmate Hridoy refused centre’s head guard Noor Islam for his haircut that made the guard angry. Hridoy mentioned pain in his hand as Hridoy cut hair for about 200 inmates of the centre before Eid.
Noor Islam informed the matter to the superintendent and assistant superintendent and alleged that the boys became addicted taking tablets.
“Besides, he indicated unethical relations between Hridoy and his friend Pavel,” said the Police Superintendent. Another boy Nayeed who was present there, informed Pavel about the matter.
An angry Pavel alongwith some of his followers then beat up Noor Islam that broke his hand. The incident led to the tragic deaths of three boy in the CDC, he said.
