5 held over killing of mother, 3 daughters

Police held five persons in connection with the killing of a woman along with her three daughters at Mirzapur in the early hours of Tuesday.
The arrestees are: Hanif Mia, 22, brother of the mastermind Jahangir Alam, his friend Sushanta, 27, maternal aunt Rahima Begum, 40, uncle Nannu Mia, 48, and rickshaw-puller Ali Hossain, 30.
Of the arrestees, rickshaw-puller Ali Hossain agreed to give confessional statement under section 164 and was sent to the court. Hanif was produced before the court with a prayer for three-day remand.
During preliminary interrogation, Hossain has confessed that he was paid Taka 200 to fetch two containers of petrol and deliver it to Jahangir’s house, police said.
A woman and her three daughters were killed when assailants set their house on fire after pouring petrol in Sohaghpara area under Mirzapur Upazila around 2 am on Tuesday.
The victims are: Hasina Begum, 35, wife of expatriate Mojibur, her daughters, Marium Akhter, 14, a class nine student of a local school, Moli Akhter, 6, and Meem Akhter, 4.
“We suspected that neighbor Jahangir Alam, son of Bahar Uddin, committed the misdeed along with his accomplices as Marium turned down his (Jahangir’s) marriage proposal,” officer-in-charge Golam Mostofa of Mirzapur Police Station told BSS. Police seized two containers of patrol from the place of occurrence, he said.
A murder case was lodged against 10 persons in this regard. Two persons-rickshaw-puller Md Ali and Jahangir’s paternal aunt Nasima – – were held for interrogation on the same day, the OC said, adding that Nasima was later released.
Efforts are on to nab Jahangir and his accomplices, he further said.
In protest against the killings, Sammilito Swamajik Andolon formed a human chain at Nirala Crossing of Tangail town yesterday demanding immediate arrested of the killers. Besides, leaders of different political parties and socio-cultural organizations visited the house of the victims at Mirzapur to console them.
