Prof. ABM. Mosharraf Husain, Bagearhat :
Five cyclone shelters in Sundarban forest including the cyclone shelter of Dubla are on the brink of ruin as they were badly affected by the cyclone Sidr of 2007 and due to excessive salinity and for want of repairing and maintenance works.
Those cyclone shelters were constructed long 16 years ago by NGO Karitas at Alorkol, Meher Alir Char, Majher Char, Office Kella and Shyalar Char to protect the fishermen and other working people of the forest from cyclone, water surge and other natural calamities. But due to the prevailing excessive salinity the cyclone shelters were partially damaged.
The damage was aggravated by the devastating cyclone Sidr of 2007. Moreover, they were not repaired during the last 16 years. For all those reasons the cyclone shelters became unfit for use. The cyclone shelter of Meher Alir Char is now being used by the members of Dubla Fishermen Group. Another cyclone shelter of the char is now being used by the employees of the forest department after it was repaired by the department to some extent. It is also being used by a contingent of RAB consists of 30 members.
The rest 3 cyclone shelters are also being used by the employees of the forest department. Cyclone shelter of Meher Alir Char is now facing the erosion of the Bay of Bengal for its existence as it is being eroded by the bay.
While Shahnur Rahman, Organizing Secretary of Dubla Fishermen Group was talking with the newsmen disclosed, the cyclone shelters played an important role to save the people from the inevitable death on November 15 at night, 2007 when the devastating cyclone Sidr swept over the coastal areas of the country.
Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Secretary General of the same organisation, told the newsmen, I apprehend that if the proper steps are not taken immediately to save the cyclone shelters their very existence will be disappeared within 2/3 years.
Major (Retd) Ziauddin, Chairman of Dubla Fishermen Group claimed, two .thousand five hundred people lost their lives at the night of cyclone Sidr of November15, 2007. But that was not recorded in the list of the Government.
