UNB, Joypurhat :At least five people were killed and 30 others injured as they fell off a freight train and crushed by it in Panchbibi upazila here on Thursday afternoon.Four of the deceased were identified as Sadequl of Puranpoil area, Azahar and Jewel of Khonjpur in the district, and Hridoy, 11, hailing from Hili in Dinajpur. Deputy commissioner of the district Mohammad Yasin confirmed the death of five people. Meanwhile, the Fire Brigade put the toll at six.Witnesses said 4-5 bogies at the trail end of the Parbatipur-bound oil-laden train got disconnected with the rest of the train as its hosepipe connecting two compartments got severed.Hearing screams of the locals, train guard informed loco masters of the incident when they stopped the engine near the Shimultali Shaheed level-crossing around 4:30pm.However, the disconnected bogies crashed into the rest as those kept moving even after the disconnection.Following the collision, many of the passengers who were travelling on the locomotive and the bogies of the train skidded off, fell onto the rail tracks and crushed by the train. One of the passengers died on the spot while four others succumbed to their injuries at hospital.Firefighters and police along with locals rescued the injured and took them to different hospitals.At least 10 of the injured were admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra. Hridoy died at the hospital.Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner formed a three-member panel to probe the train accident.
