About 4817 transformers of Rural Electrification Board (REB) blasted in the single month of July and more 76483 are in risky state for load exceeding the capacity, sources said.
There are 6,80,000 transformers on the electricity transmission line of REB of which 1,20,000 were risky six months ago. Now it is 76483 due to replacing, said Brigadier Moyeen Uddin, Chairman of REB.
REB will replace over loaded transformers as soon as possible. A project is being examined by planning commission to replace all transformer together costing Tk1400 crore, he said.
The transformers become over loaded for two reasons. The consumers use additional electricity while some dishonest employees of the distribution company are giving new connection of electricity illegally, which affected the capacity of a transformer.
The consumers of REB have to pay the charge of replacing new transformer, which varies in respect of Power Development Board, Dhaka Electricity Supply Company Ltd, and Dhaka Power Distribution Company.
REB takes initiative to change the discrimination. In the next board meeting of REB, a proposal is to be placed for replacing transformers with the finance of Rural Electrification Board, Brigadier Moyeen Uddin said.
