47 KL-bound people rescued in C’Bazar

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard and police in separate drives rescued 47 people and arrested seven brokers in Teknaf and Maheshkhali upazilas on Monday, foiling their bid to go to Malaysia.
A coast guard team conducted a drive in the Bay of Bengal near Cheradia of Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf upazila at around 10 am and rescued 39 people while they were going to Malaysia illegally by a trawler, said Kyati Mong Marma, in-charge of Coast Guard Saint Martin’ s station.
The coast guard members also arrested an alleged human trafficker- Syed Alam, son of late Kamal Uddin of Ukhia upazila – during the drive.
Later, they were handed over to Teknaf Police Station. The rescued were preparing to leave for Malaysia illegally through the Bay of Bengal.
In another drive, a team of Detective Branch of (DB) police rescued six Malaysia-bound people and arrested six alleged human traffickers from Sonadia Island in Maheshkhali upazila at around 2 pm.
The arrestees are Rashid Ullah, 45, son of Nur Mohammad of Ramu upazila; Abdul Kaiyum, 30, son of Mohammad Jalal;
Abu Taher, 19, son of Abul Hashem; Nurul Amin, 33, son of Abul Kashem of Ukhia upazila;
Abdullah, 20, son of Salam; and Nur Hossain, 24, son of Nurul Bashar of Mongdu upazila of Buchidong district in Myanmar. Besides, police in another drive arrested two Myanmar nationals while going to Malaysia illegally from Radiant Hatchery area near Reju Bridge in Maheshkhali upazila around 1 pm.
Tofail Ahmed, additional superintendent of Cox’s Bazar police, said legal action will be taken against them.
