As many as 463 deaths had been reported due to road accidents during the New Year holiday throughout Thailand, a senior government official said on Thursday.
Deputy Interior Minister Suthee Makboon quoted a report of the Center for Prevention and Reduction of Road Accidents as saying that 463 people had been reportedly killed by road accidents and 3,892 others injured throughout the country over the last seven days of the festive season or from December 27 until January 2.
Despite sustained campaigns of the authorities nationwide, this year’s fatalities, most of which referred to motorcyclists and their passengers, accounted for an approximate 10 percent increase from a previous year.
Most road accidents reportedly involved drunk driving and speeding, according to the deputy interior minister.
Nakhon Ratchasima was reported as the province with 25 fatalities, the highest in the country whereas Nakhon Si Thammarat was reported as the province with 118 road accidents, the highest in the country.
