Kotwali police arrested six leaders and activists of Jamaat and BNP and its front organisations here on Wednesday night for their alleged involvement with various recent violence and subversive activities, police sources said.
Of them, police arrested two union level leaders of Jamaat including Monnaf Ali, 45, and Mizanur Rahman Bulu of Chandanpat union under Sadar upazila in the district.
Besides, Kotwali police arrested four leaders and activist of BNP and its front organisations including Akkas Ali, 45, Nazmul Islam, 26, Bulu Mian, 28 and Taizul Islam from different places in the city.
The arrested persons are allegedly involved with various subversive activities like hurling petrol bombs on passenger buses and other vehicles and other terrorist activities conducted by them in recent days at different places.
After primary interrogation, the arrested persons were produced before different Rangpur courts from where they were sent to the jail hajat later this afternoon, the sources said.
Sylhet Correspondent reports: Police have detained 15 people including BNP-Jamaat activists in a special drive in the district during the ongoing countrywide blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance. The law enforcers conducted the drive in the district from Monday evening till Wednesday morning, said Sylhet Police Super Nure Alam Mina. He said: ‘They were detained for carrying out violence in the area.’ The law enforcers would continue the drive to maintain law and order situation in Sylhet, added the police official.
BSS from Narail adds: Police in an overnight drive arrested 25 persons including three activists of BNP and Jamaat from different parts of the district on various charges. Of them, 10 persons including an activist of Jamaat were arrested from Sadar, six including two activists of BNP from Lohagara, four from Kalia and five from Naragati, according to district police control room. Police Super of Narail Rafiqul Islam said that they arrested three BNP-Jamaat activists on charges of creating anarchy while the remaining others were arrested in different cases and allegations.
